Course Description: Understanding the visual arts, and their roles in western and non-western traditions, through an examination of their media, formal structure, and cultural context. Significant visual achievements, from ancient times to the contemporary period will be examined and discussed.

The over-all purpose of this course is to encourage an appreciation of the Visual Arts in world cultures. This is a highly visual course, in which we will examine and discuss many works of art. We will be looking at, and analyzing, many images in order to gain an understanding of their form and content.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze and discuss significant works of art, as seen in world cultures, as forms of cultural and creative expression. The student will demonstrate his/her understanding of art concepts and terminology, and his/her ability to analyze and discuss both the formal structure and iconography of works of art. Students will demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of cultural diversity as seen in the artistic heritage of world cultures, and be able to explain the ways in which artistic production expresses the culture and values of its time and place.
Assignments and Grades:
Your grade will be based on your performance on class tests and projects, as well as your participation in class and group discussions.
5% = what makes art "art" essay
5% = A hands-on art project (can be a collage, you do not need to know how to draw)
20% = A 750 word (minimum) essay in which you compare and contrast two works of art.
50% = Exams: mid-term exam=25%, and the final exam =25%
10% = an art review of (or a personal response to) work on display in Jackson or a nearby city (minimum of 500 words)
10% Group research presentation
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. (Plagiarism = presenting someone else's thoughts, ideas or words as your own.) Expect to fail the assignment if you copy from a web site, book, or another source without giving proper references. You must write in your own words and site your sources.
Grade Scale: A=90 to 100, B= 80 to 89, C= 70 to 79, D= 60 to 69, F= below 60 (a minus = the first two grades in the category and a plus the last two, i.e. B- = 80 or 81 and B+ = 88 or 89
Attendance: You are allowed one week of absences per course. In a class that meets three times a week, you are only permitted to have three absences. Save them for emergencies! Each absence after that can result in a loss of one point from your final grade for a maximum loss of 10 points or one letter grade.
Since we will be viewing images that may not be in the text your attendance is very important to your understanding of the material covered. If you miss a class, please get the information that you missed from another student. It is a good idea to swap phone numbers with someone in the class.
Disabilities: Students with documented disabilities should notify me of any special needs that they may have. We want to make sure that all students have every opportunity to do well in this course.
