I grew up in Memphis and attended Hillcrest High School. I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lambuth College,  majoring in English with a minor in speech and drama. After graduation, I first worked at First United Methodist Church in Jackson, Tennessee, as director of Christian education and activities, and then at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis as an English teacher. I received the Master of Arts in Teaching Degree from Memphis State University in 1980.

While raising two children in Trenton, Tennessee, I worked as a dental assistant in my husband's office, as an aerobics instructor, and as a community volunteer in the local elementary school, at First United Methodist Church, and in the community theater organization. I began teaching English and Speech classes part-time at Jackson State and Dyersburg State Community Colleges in 1987 when my children started school.

I received a Master of Arts degree in English with a concentration in professional and technical writing at the University of Memphis in May 1995 and a doctorate in higher education from the University of Memphis in 2004. My dissertation research involved studying the retention of developmental math students.

I attended the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University in 2004 and earned the title of Developmental Education Specialist.

I like to watch movies, work in the garden, and read. I sing alto in the Trenton First United Methodist Church choir and ring in their handbell choir. I teach 3rd-6th grade Sunday School at my church and enjoy leading their singing with my guitar.

I am taking online classes in teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Memphis. I don't ever want to stop taking formal college classes. There are too many things I want to know about.

Our family loves to travel--we've been to every state in the continental U.S. as well as Australia, Costa Rica, and New Zealand. I have taken JSCC educational trips to Spain, Costa Rica, and England.

In the summer of 2009, I spent a month teaching in Hyderabad, India, one of the most incredible adventures I have ever had. I was humbled by the hospitality and respect I was given by the Muslim community I worked and lived with. They valued God, family, and education, and taught me much more than I taught them.
