      1. Reviving TALC

There was discussion related to the status of TALC. It was agreed that the TALC borrower’s cards were working well. There was an attempt at a joint binding purchase, but this didn’t work out. Cooperative purchasing is encouraged. It was suggested that Tenn-Share or TEL be used as a purchasing avenue. However, it was thought that joint purchases within the group would be helpful with the idea of inviting private academic institutions to share, i.e. Vanderbilt.

A suggestion was made to include the UT libraries into the listing of TBR owned databases. Sue Szostak will ask UT libraries to provide their information. This will be shared and possibly posted on the TBR/UT Library Deans’ and Directors’ site. Also, Sue Szostak (TBR) and Linda Phillips (UT) will serve as liaisons with the libraries wishing to negotiate joint agreements. Linda and Sue can then assist with negotiations and with information on databases for the State academic libraries.

Libraries’ borrower policies are to be updated on the TALC web site. Library directors/deans are to send this information to Tamara Miller.

Cooperative staff development is another means of sharing resources. Scott Cohen has developed a model for this in West Tennessee. He will be asked to develop this statewide.

      2. Scholarly Portals Barbara Dewey suggested a sharing of subject specialists for the development of scholarly portals. Librarians at different libraries could volunteer to maintain and create links to subject web sites that could be put into one portal. Directors/Deans are to recommend librarians who could begin this work.

      3. Tutorial Collaboration

There is a need to share web-based tutorials. These are very labor-intensive to develop. Barbara asked if the Directors/Deans would identify areas for our campuses that we might share. These might tie into web courses. Also, it might be helpful in identifying outcomes for information literacy.

A cautionary note was expressed concerning Xanadu and Questia. Librarians should be contacting campus faculty and letting them know about campus on-line sources. This would keep students from having to pay for these other databases.

Barbara volunteered to take the lead on this project.

      4. UT/TBR Library Conference

It was suggested that an annual TBR/UT library conference would be useful for the sharing of ideas and expertise. There was some concern for travel budgets. It was thought that this type of conference could be tied into CULS, Tenn-Share, or TLA, but as a separate activity. Library directors/deans will be surveyed as to need and when. It was also suggested that there be sub list servs under TLA-L. It might be good to develop subject groups. Rita Scher will ask the TLA publishing committee about this.

Areas to be developed could be:

      Acquistions

      Collection development

      Circulation/ILL

      Information literacy/Reference

      5. State of the Libraries

Discussion around the table included cuts in library travel, periodical budgets, and no new money to maintain collections.

      GASB was discussed.

      24/7 reference service was discussed.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

      Respectfully submitted,

      Sue Crites Szostak
